Welcome
AABC Racing members focus on competing in USA Cycling Road, Cyclocross and BMX races. AABC members are predominately based in Maryland, and compete in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and other Mid-Atlantic states.
Raced twice. Reston is a tough double, especially when the races are back to back. AABC did the M35+ and the M3/4, consisting of myself, Ron, Bob, and James.
M35+, we knew it was going to be hard, no real team plan, just survive. My own personal plan was to stay well positioned and latch onto significant breakaways without putting my nose into the wind unless I was in one of those significant breakaways. I defined significant to consist of Chip, Ramon, Chuck, or Art. The race started off obscenely hard and I found myself toward the back instantaneously. It took about 10 laps to get up to good position, got there and goal #1 was satisfied. I latched onto attacks that included the above, and didn’t stick my nose in the wind. Not really any reason other than I couldn’t, the pace was too high (for me, and in the back of my mind I had to race again). Despite lots of attempts to break things up by Chuck and Chip, Basler, and other strong guys, the finish was groupo compatto. I must have been 11th wheel on the last lap because without really trying to do anything, that's where I finished. I went to the car to change jerseys, bottles, and get a cliff shot.
M3/4 , I got a call up. That was kind of cool. Especially because my parents were in town. It only cost me a $20 to Joe Jefferson (just kidding). Ron and I planned to take turns attacking and counterattacking until one of us made the break. Since I was up front, my turn came 1st. People were taking peculiar lines on the downhill portion of the course, since I kept gaining positions, I decided to attack early in on the downhill. It really didn’t take much, I just bombed it, got a gap, buzzed through turn 5 and punched it back up the hill through the S/F. After getting caught, Ron did the same. Then I went again, and took a strong guy from Evo with me, I thought we might have something, but turned out not so. After a few more aggressive moves, things ended up in the inevitable field sprint. I was tapped from the back to back races and feeling the bonk coming on. Kind of like the Masters race, I must have been in 7th wheel on the last lap because I dont think I passed anyone and my sprint was feeble, for 7th place. Kind of a disappointing result, but it was a fun race. Another highlight - Joe Jefferson said Ron was pedaling triangles. I didnt hear it, but my wife thought it pretty funny. Ron – I would like to add that Joe Jefferson also said it looked like “I was looking for the exit,” and it looked like ‘my eyes were bleeding.” Also, James gave me a mint chocolate gu. I like mint, I like chocolate, but I think a full on bonk might be preferable to a mint chocolate gu. James, thanks anyway, I needed the calories. Thanks for reading.
