Stage 1: This was a TT first thing Saturday morning at 8:25 am. It was very humid. I was soaked in sweat before I even got started. Got in my warm-up and headed to the start. The distance was originally 12 miles. But, they shorted it to 9.5 miles. I had pretty good legs for this and managed to ride a 21:40 time, which put me in 9th place on the GC. Oh yeah, I caught two people in front of me.
Stage 2: This was the crit race that went off at 12:30 that same day. Now it was hot and humid. I was hoping that I didn't go to hard on the TT and had some effort left for this crit race. They changed the course this year and added a steep long climb on the back of the course with 7 turns total. The cool part was that I was called up since I was in the top 10. Nice! So, for the first 6 laps I was near the front holding good position for the climb each lap. The guys who didn't go to hard on the TT started pushing the pace up the climb to shake the field apart. The first guy was some one from whole wheel velo team and then some one from the Iron hill team. The field was suffering each time. Some guy suffering ran into the side of me and about knocked me off my bike. Well, that messed up my rythm and my mental focus. Now I realized that I was suffering too. Man it hurts to suffer when you think about it. Well, with 5 laps to go I cracked on the climb and fell off the pace. I finished 25th and that put me down to 16th on the GC.
Stage 3: Ok! The final race and my legs feel as though they have recovered from Saturday's races. Our race started at 8:10 am and was a 54 mile race. I was at the front ready to go and thinking stay near the front and watch others work. There were a couple of teams that had 4 or 5 guys in the race. My thinking was to let them pull anything back that they didn't like going in a break. The first lap had several attempts to start a breakaway. But, each time it would be chased down. On lap 2 about 6 guys was heading up the rode and I jumped on two guys wheels who was trying to bridge to the break. As soon as we reached the break the field was chasing us down. On the finale lap a three man break was up the road and had a 45 second gap. They managed to stay out there for about 12 miles. Then, about 3 teams put riders on the front to pull it back so we could have a large group sprint. The race was never that hard to weed out the tired guys. So, we have a big group of guys who think they can win in a sprint headed for the finish. Scary thought! We have a long and fast descent going into the finish 1 1/2 K. Doing 45 mph and trying to fight to stay in the front was a tense moment. Then take a sweeping right hand turn at the bottom at that speed. I was 20 spots back and had to stick my nose out in the wind to move up to 10th place before headong into the last two turns. Around the last right hand turn and the sprint was on and I managed to finish in 8th place. I was just alittle to far back to get a better result. This result put me back up to 13th overall in the GC.
After all is said and done. I had a good race and finished well. Thankfully I stayed up and didn't go home with road rash.
