By: Doug Woods Just a quick report from Triathlon Age group nationals in Vermont. I placed 31st in my age group and just missed out on making the team for worlds. My race was however quite eventful. My swim went off with out a hitch and despite the slowish time was actually a pretty decent swim for me. On the ride I was on a solid if not spectacular ride until mile 23 when I cleared customs and discovered air travel in vermont........ I was on my way into town down a slight hill on good roads doing 28mph when my front tire flatted and my rim bottomed out on a bump in the road. My handle bars went sideways and I started a short but spectacular Air New Zealand flight making a slightly bumpy landing on my right shoulder and head. The dent inside the polystyrene on my aero helmet suggest I was lucky. The landing failed to knock any sense into me and after the requisite couple of minutes checking that body parts were working I discovered my right shoulder was not functioning properly (Grade 3 separated shoulder). So I picked up my bike put the chain back on and peadlled the last 2 miles into town on a flat with a separated shoulder (tricky) and having very little clue about who I was or what I was doing. I then took off on the run and posted my best triathlon 10k split so far 38:55. Just shows you don't need a functioning brain to run! In the end it was a very good race for me despite the air travel. I'm now back and rehabing. Road rash, bruised hip, separated shoulder (popped ligaments). Will put the bike on the trainer as soon as I can lift it. Looks like it will be a few weeks until I'm back out on the roads with you all. |
